I didn't say that contractors should literally say "As much as I can get" I said agencies shouldn't play games. If you know what rate a contractor can get (and of course you do know this) then just tell them. Anything else feels like we're being screwed.

I completely agree with you on all issue excecpt one. As a long serving recruiter I don't think your rules regarding money work in the real world.

Firstly with regards to the rate. We are not always in a position to offer you a rate as we are governed by our clients. They will ask us, like we ask you what a contractor costs and until we know what you are seeking, it's impossible for us to come to a rate. I have a set margin that I put on all contractors, it's simply your rate, plus government taxes etc, plus our margin. We then present this price to our clients.
You are a contractor no different to any other industry. When a painting contractor comes to your house, the customer will ask, how much do you charge. If the painter said, "pay me as much as you can", you'd quickly close the door and call another painter. If you honestly cannot value your time then why contract.

Thanks Mike, and you made the perfect point - contractors aren't stupid. I have no idea why bad agencies think they can get away with they rubbish they try.

Spot on as always, Mr. Angry. Here in the States they tend to play the same compensation games. I remember one case where I was interviewed by the employer after the recruiter had given them my resume. The employer basically told me, "Hey, you look great for this job, but I just can't pay the $x that the agency is asking for. Can you talk to them for me?" Naturally, the $x was $2y, where y was what they were offering me. When I brought this up with the recruiter, the guy got very red-faced and went into an unsolicited tirade justifying why they were paid so much. At that point it didn't really matter because the trust wasn't there anymore and I wasn't going to work with these guys.

Recruiters, please treat your contractors with respect. We aren't stupid, and we have long memories. If you treat us well there is a good chance we will refer you other qualified candidates and talk you up with the clients. Thank you.
