Maliha: the quick version - I majored in acting and writing (scriptwriting) and did a lot of radio work. A lot of fun but useless for getting a job. While unemployed I saw a job ad saying "out of work actors, use your voice skils) - it was for telemarketing. I went from telemarketing to customer service. I worked my way up to team leader in the call centre for a big insurance company. One day the manager said "You've got an analytical mind, you'd make a good Business Analyst. So I moved sideways and learned the trade "on the job" (I have no formal qualifications which drives CompSci types nuts).

That was 10 years ago, so everything you read here is the product of 10 years in the IT trenches :)

Salamaat,
I am really curious on your journey into the world of BAs Mr Angry. You mentioned before you had a degree in theater; how did you make the move? Also did you specialize in a certain area like sales, finance, etc (business wise) and then studied the technical or both?

Okay, you can email me if you don't want to write about it here. take care :)

[...] You know there’s a bubble afoot when the Dow hits 12k. So, what would be more obvious than a spate of rotten projects and burnout articles? Yup, Dare Obasanjo talks about identifying bad projects. An interesting tie-in with that, the AngryAussie on workplace discretion. Incidentally, angryaussie and engtech have now become regular reads since Joel jumped the shark. [...]

Dear Mr. Angry,

I definitely know what you are talking about here. If developers were as exposed to clients as I am, that would probably end up with some serious physical injuries. Business analysts are protecting the society from violence and crime, in fact. ;)

In my previous company I worked on product which was sold online, to the invisible customers, and I only had contact with customers through support. Their requests for features were sometimes… interesting. But only after I moved to another company and had direct contact with customers I realized how difficult that job is. In my case, writing notes and emails about “who said what and when” has unfortunately become a routine.

Now I know patience is definitely a number one skill for any BA.

Regards!
