Seriously. My next desktop is definitely going to be a Mac. probably one of those big screen iMacs. I was exposed to Windows Vista at a friend’s place recently and there’s no way I’m having that horror inflicted on me.

What is it with all the “Vista eats babies” nonsense you get around the place. I’ve had it since it RTM’d (yay MSDN subscriptions! Yay stupid workplaces who don’t cancel MSDN subscriptions even though you stopped working there 18 months ago!) and it’s fine.
In fact, it’s better than fine, and having to use XP at work is a real pain in the .
I’ve managed to avoid contaminating it with Adobe software in the main (except flash), and fervently avoided Java (what’s with these people and their “stick an icon in the systray so that people can get notified when we update things every year or so” retartedness? Anything that installs some sort of personal upgrade service has been axed, which is why it’s nice that MS have started using just one to update windows, office, visual studio etc….) And it’s lovely.
The only problem it’s ever given me was because nvidia couldn’t write quality software if you stood over them with a mallet.
So what is everyone complaining about?
You’re all freaks if you ask me, and if you want to use leopard instead then you’re welcome to it, I’ll suffer only the slightest twinge of envy over Coverflow and nothing else.
If it wasn’t for Windows and allowing an open market place you would still be living in some cave communicationg with a string and two dixie cups! T want to know where MS gets off forcing updates and a re-boot while I am in the middle of a long document or transaction on the net. This is annoying and costs me time. Why does MS think they can just cancel my activities and grab my machine? Should I come up there and cancel some activities and grab some assets? Why is that not justified if this atrocious MS behaviour is?

You know how microsoft got it’s name? One day when Bill was getting out of the shower, he saw himself in the mirror.
I was a computer engineer for 12 years trying to keep a business going in an environment where the product I was relying on as a reseller was not only inherently flawed but abandoned by the manufacturer. No support, other than forums and juvenile help desks. In the end I closed the business down and went back to a previous passion Design and Print. Now, I have inherited the same problems that plagued by clients.. Windows reporting errors with esoteric messages that provide absolutely no clue as to the solution. I have come to the conclusion that Bill Gates is a crook, a very big crook who has kept a secret about the core of his operating system, the coding that no-one is allowed to see. The secret is, I suspect, it uses archaic and totally anachronistic instructions that were relevant in the 80’s under DOS but in the ‘multi-tasking’ gui environment (cough, spit, vomit) the core code is inept and struggling especially when it comes to processor handling and memory management.
The G 8 Leaders should come together and discuss a strategy to phase out Microsoft and replace them with a cross platform alternative that is made available as an open source but regulated product. It should take only about 12 years to get Microsoft out of the system if lead by people with vision and political will.
If we don’t act now we will burden our sons and daughters with the same shit we have struggled with since the 90’s.

Singe 3 days im trying to install Java 8 but you Have to Have sp 2 so i installed… Fucking pc wont Boot.. fixed the bootfiles manually… Pc Wont Boot after 3 hours of searching the Net and working it boots… Cant install Java cant install nothing, i Made Windows Update after several hours, 12 of 77 Updates worked…. THE REST FAILED AND IM INFORMED AFTER HALF A DAY! But….. Pc wont Boot…… -.- FUCK MICROSOFT AND WINDOWS!!! Fixing the Boot doesnt work. Sysreparation doesnt work. Sysrecovery: DOESNT WORK!!! FUCK THIS!!! Man…. Only cause i wanted an Os which can install programs -.- now the whole fckn week is over and i spend my whole freetime with trying to fix and Update Windows vista…. Win 10 is pretty sharp on pass words.you can use windows 10,win 10 or other varieties as long as you add things like great or fantastic.Add fuck windows 10 or variety of words on how you feel and it will reject the pass word. Try to use fuck you windows 10 on outlook express which i did not want. Said that pass word had been tried to many times by others.

My brother just got a new laptop and it has Vista. He hates it. He’s 66 years old and new things don’t come easy to him anyway. He’s used to XP so this Vista thing has him totally befuddled. As my Dad always used to say “If it works, don’t fix it”.
Every single user that I know hates Vista. The really frustrating thing (for me) is that in a year or perhaps some months, it will be the only Windows OS available for average Joe that buys a pre-built PC. It’s a good thing that I invested in a CD-R edition of XP pro.

fuck microsoft. Went to linux completely after trying vista rtm. I wanted to throw the computers out the damn window. 2 hours to install?! 10 minutes to boot?! no hardware compatibility. No drivers available from their manufacturers. Got god knows how many bsod’s during the damn installs. and then it tells me that it can’t load any of my xp games or apps because they aren’t vista compatible. Bill gates and his lapdog balmer can kiss my ass. Just cut my loss’s and went back to a unix based os. Havn’t had so much as one kernel panic or frozen app.

They have monopoly products, basically, and the design is, so far as I can tell, excellent if your design goals include really stupid extra keystrokes, extra work, crappy usability, and the general delight in inflicting pain. They have a huge market which is going to go away, even given the general lethargy of mankind and the problems with Mac or Linux, they’ll lose it because they are so incompetent. Just flaming idiots.
You need to remember that Micro$haft’s software never started out as their software. They just took good shit and ruined it. Observe:
DOS: Bought from another developer, played withe a little bit, then put on to EVERY IBM PC under a licence agreement.
Windows 3.0 through to Windows XP: 3.0 was a direct clone of Amiga Workbench; they tweaked it and shovelled more useless “functionality” into it and migrated it towards MAC-OS, but Workbench is where it started.
Windows Vista: It’s the bloatware version of OS-X! How Bill Gates had the stones to deny that is way beyond me; the whole GUID is just stolen, wholesale, from MAC! The only thing about that which makes me laugh is that it means that the designers at Microsoft must use MACs!!! Bwahahahahaha!!!!

I find that if you turn everything off for vista (all the fancy effects etc) its actually quite usable. But funnily enough it pretty much makes it exactly like XP.

I got a Vista this SUNDAY (2 days ago) it now will not cinnect to the internet, so now I’m back to my 6 year old Mac OS X, that is more high tech then the vista. Ok, so we’re all pissed off at Bill Gates and Microshaft. I do have to admit the guy IS a genius, just not a genius for making computer software. He is a genius at ripping people off in mass quantities, and locking his strategy down so that we can’t do a damned thing about it. Dude, I made the switch to Ubuntu because of so many things. I m not a big fan of apple either cuz their stuf is more hyped up e.g iPhone (although I have one) but atleasts looks good with an excellent out of the box experience.

Sadly, 98% of the people in my country are using winblows, and 85% of them don’t know what an operating system is… I mean, I got the same performance from Winblows XP and from openSUSE with compiz fusion effects…

Christ do people have a lot to say concerning this one. I’d just like to point out that I have Vista and (perhaps I’m the only one) I have never had a single problem with it. I’m convinced that whether or not Vista works for you has to do with the quality of hardware in your computer. If you live in America and you go out and buy some piece of shit Dell from Wal-Mart then I would hardly be surprised that you hate Vista. At the same time I think if you invest in a good computer with decent specs you can have a good experience with Vista. I did. But hey, thats just me.
I hate to piss on your chips, splitknife, but my main rig a an Intel Core2Duo 2X2.4GHz rig with 2 Gb of DDR2 and an nVidea 8400GX card in it, and it runs Windows Vista Home Premium BADLY. So badly, in fact, that I now have it running the Windows 7 Ultimate Edition Beta (which, I’m pleased to report, runs like a dream). It’s not about the hardware, it’s about a shitty OS which MS should never have released in the first place.

Alrighty then custador. I run Vista Home Premium as well, but on a HP m9402f with an AMD Phenom Quad-Core 2.3 GHz, 7 GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA GeForce6150E.
Believe me, I’m not saying that Vista doesn’t run badly for a lot of people, or that Microsoft employees weren’t smoking dope during significant portions of code writing, but I think its a mistake to just write Vista off as a piece of worthless shit altogether. Some people it runs great for, others (including you apparently) not so much. I don’t know enough about computers to support this with any conclusive evidence, but I think that its just a matter of getting a good combination of hardware and software.
Systolic pressure must be up around 200 after spending 2 hours trying to get Word 2007 to print one little envelope address single space. God, I hate Microsoft. They f-up everything they touch. Word 2003 was easier to use and Word 2000 was easier yet, and Word 97 was easier etc. I’m in the process of learning to use Linux, but there are going to be some challenges there, too. It is comforting to know that I’m not the only person who ended up finding and posting to this little community of malcontents by Googling “fuck microsoft”.

Ive been using a PC for years, ive had every possible virus,bug,glitch,spyware and adware and all those other nasties… (over time, managing to clean up and continue with my work/browsing and game playing) – I always used to defend microsoft too when people would look down their nose at XP.
But now, ive had one toooooo many f***ing issues with nasty bugs, updates, registry scans, defrags, re-installs, uninstalls, time consuming scans and reboots etc etc. – Now, it really IS my time to get my biggest sledge hammer and end my PC’s life. –
I have no money for a MAC, but i will save and save and save until i CAN afford one.
Time is also money, so i still think i’ll be better off in the long run.

I did research and found out that on a Mac that a program doesn’t intrude with OS functions (like inserting a symbol). This is at the OS level, not at the f* program level, asshat M$. I’m so done. To everyone about to trash a perfectly good computer because of a shitty M$ OS, PLEASE – give Linux a try. It’s not that difficult. I just got started with Ubuntu 8.10 and it’s way better than any Windows (I’ve used everything from 3.1 to Vista and everything in between) and even better than MacOSX. Don’t blame the hardware! You’ll save money and frustration.

Just spent the whole evening with “microsoft” “update” and now there’s no way to just save-off the update history as a text list. And they hard-code the results to just 10 per page. What are they thinking at that place? Do they ever use their own junk-interface? I tried save-as *.mht and it results in some redirected embedded html in the file. Idiots.

Microsoft always uses a “swiss cheese approach to security” which has created a gigantic security software industry that sells solutions to protect against viruses, spyware, registry corruption, spam, and dark hacking attacks.
If Microsoft actually gave a damn about security (they never will as long as making money fast is their top priority), we wouldn’t have nearly as many problems as we do now.
This stupid UAC garbage is a leaky-bandaid solution to the problem. Did you know that if software is engineered to use certain API calls that the whole UAC thing gets bypassed completely? Many of the spyware and virus authors know this well, which means that only the regular software vendors get penalized by this nonsense by way of having to support frustrated users who are sick and tired of clicking the OK button repeatedly just to run an icon from their desktop.
I say “screw you” to anybody who thinks that users just need training. What users need is a system that works without interruption, and UAC is one big annoying interruption.

I work in computer graphics/3D animation, and have been running graphics applications on PC’s for years now. Vista is without a doubt the most irritating, useless, horrible OS ever written and theres not an animation studio in the world that would incorporate it into a workflow, because it would without a doubt lead to their going out of business (and I’m not just making that up. No studio will go near it because dealing with it’s many glitches and flaws would be a massive time sink). I have two systems that came preinstalled with Vista, and both have experienced an extraordinary amount of program crashes, bugs, and other irritants. I have to reboot my system at least once daily, my programs crash at a minimum of 5 times a day a piece. I’ve tried turning off aero, following a few guides to speed up Vista’s performance, but nothing makes it even remotely enjoyable or efficient compared to other OS’s. While I suppose it would be alright for doing basic stuff like checking your email, listening to music or running microsoft apps, i’ve even had issues just running microsuck software like IE in the past. I have no viruses, nothing like that….the OS is just garbage if you plan on doing anything on your system beyond the grasp of a 5 year old (which ironically are the only people Microsuck can convince to endorse their garbage in commercials). As far as Windows 7 goes, I have had so much stress and aggravation over Vista that I am no longer willing to trust Microsoft, and this will be my last generation using Windows. At my last workplace I had two systems, a Mac and a PC running XP. While I would still prefer XP and i’m aware that Mac isn’t perfect, it’s sure as hell better than Vista. I’ve dabbled with Ubuntu but theres no driver for my printer, so I’m thinking I’ll be moving on to Mac as soon as I can afford one. Screw Microsoft.

I found this looking for anti-MS rants. I jus installed the trial version of XL ’07. I’v been using open office calc for a while, but have been using XL ’03 at work for many years, & now I have a ton of homework to do, & the open office is getting a little irritating, mainly because the book is about XL, not OO. OK fine, I get the “full featured” 60 day limit trial version. OK, its not full featured, no charts. That’s what I need damn it. OK, fine its a free trial version. But THEY said it was a full featured trail version. Therefore I should be able to create charts. More irritating than that is the fact that I open the program. Go to the file menu / ribbon / whatever the fuck it is now, then OPEN. Click on the drive dropdown. It goes into this mode where it has to configuration mode that took forever. finally click on a drive, 2 minutes later, I can click on a folder, 2 minutes later I can click on another folder. OK, the hell with this, I’ll just browsw through windows explorer & open the file.
I mean its just rediculous.
I do have vista installed on a new machine (not this one), & it runs fine. I’m running 3DSMAX 64 bit. It can handle files (for rendering) that my 32 bit XP machines couldn’t handle. (I must have bought the one copy of vista that actually works).
but otherwise I think M$ totally sucks..
like when you upgrade vista, it goes from the excessive 10GB, to the insane 32GB!!! (hint: find a slipstreamed ISO w/ sp1 & sp2 )

I can’t make IIS work on Vista. it’s frustrating… and it takes more than 45 minutes to install it on a 2.0 Core 2 duo with 4GM rams laptop! So when you go and tr to open IIS, it shows a blank window with nothing inside ! WTF !

Through continuing incompetence and ineptitude, blackmail and cohersion, theft and bribery he managed to put his “mafia modeled” company at the top of the charts. No other firm in the world can produce untested, unqualified, deliberately flawed products from a pile of ex-hippy incompetents and hope to survive. Microsoft has managed thus far, but alas the end is in sight! The growth of Linux has threatened Microsoft as there are more and more user friendly versions and even an effort to make those versions cross-compatible. In Japan we see a radical departure from Windows and an alarmingly high rate “defections” from Windows which has caused Microsoft to actually look into the situation. Here in China, it’s far easier: I use a pirate version of XP as we all do, and various hacked versions of XP offer a relatively stable performance while denying the revenue Microsoft would otherwise like to enjoy as they wring it from the hearts and souls of those who suffer at their behest. Yes, Bill Gates … 1.3 billion pirates in China, all using your Windows and you don’t get a fucking penny! How’s it feel? Read, lose sleep. Wake up, read it again. Ok….well, I think I’ve officially concluded that about 3/4 of yall are people who fly off the handle at the first sign of trouble, and don’t want to bother to take a good 30 minutes to learn a little something and never have to deal with that issue again. I’ve used XP since day one. Have I ever left? No. Why? Cause XP is a great OS. I’m not going to bash on Mac at all, either. Macs are wonderful computers, when it comes to media and such, but very limited, and with the right specs, a PC can easily out do a Mac. Sure, if you have the time to install/learn one of the open sources, such as Linux, then go for it. They put the reigns of your computer at your finger tips. Still, I prefer XP. Vista was bad, yeah, but don’t bash on MS when many of their products are actually good. XP is a great OS, and I honestly can’t see why it is so trendy to hate MS these days. I could go on and on explaining my reasons for always sticking to MS, but I would rather not, seeing as, from what I’ve observed, this comment will be flammed at and such, because for some odd reason I don’t yell and scream at my PC for something I could easily fix. Now, what’s really infuriates me is the amount of belittling comments that are aimed at Gates. He is a man who started from the bottom and has worked his way up to the top. Mind you, every one at the top has had their dirty dealings, but Gates deserves not the malicious claims you make against him, especially considering the amount of money he pumps into charities. Basically, Macs are nice, but expensive and limited. Linux is wonderful, but not everyone has the time to learn how to use it properly…or should I say not everyone needs to learn? Windows XP brings together all I really need and can “beast” any system if it’s built correctly. That said, I might never look at this blog again, and I originally had no intention of commenting. I switched to Ubuntu. It’s a wee bit rough around the edges (only with installing software, and that’s automatic once you figure out where the repositories are)

I figure that they’ve cost me more than 10,000,000 heart beats (time I’ve wasted) in fixing, resetting settings that don’t stay set, reinstalling, researching google and forums and other places for fixes to their many annoyances, lost data due to BSOD’s (Linux apps will sometimes crash but the whole machine does not go down.) If you have 10 things running and one of them really crashes the only impact is the one that does crash; heartbeats lost to endless clicking over and over and over and over and over again for things that should be remembered by the software application. For example: Word every single time i paste text into a document i have to go CLICK on the edit menu and then CLICK on Paste Special and then CLICK on the unformatted text option so that what I paste stays in the same font and size that I am working in. Why is there no setting to change the default action? BAD Design; BAD Programming.

I am fucking tired of being Macrocrap’s guinea pig. Every goddamn browser I run (Mozilla FF, Chrome, and IE, piece of shit that it is) is crashing since I bought a new laptop with Opaque 7. Sure, there are cool features, but that doesn’t mean a fucking thing if I cannot open a browser longer than 5 fucking mikes before it craps out. Bill Gates is a fucking terrorist, goddamn cocksucker.
Just so you know, the IE browser I was forced to use crapped out directly after the last post; I have spent the time between posts trying to regain access to the internet. I guess I could rant some more, but what is the point? As long as we buy, we are at their mercy…

UNIX has always been the way to go for all practical use, speed, reliability, and smaller OS’s with small resource use.
Microsoft bought DOS and ran an app on top of it called Windows for Workgroups (multitasking on a machine incapable of multitasking before you even ran your first program).
Apple, dear God… give UP! They were a Motorola PPC architecture that never could fully use the advanced hardware. OS was ALWAYS buggy and ALWAYS crashed. Now, since the dawn of iMacs and the new Macs, they are all simply overpriced x86 PC’s running LINUX (that’s right, UNIX) with a simple OS facelift to look Mac-ky… what a freakin joke. The commercials say they don’t havevirus problems… NO KIDDING! PC’s are the mainstream, that’s why hackers program for them primarily. If by some miracle Mac took over, THEY would then be the focus of the Virus attacks- it’s not the OS or the fine talents of the Apple company that prevent this you know. Justin Long should read up more on the crap he’s paid to say.
Windows is going the rout of LINUX too (hence why they bought and shelved Corel’s LINUX OS af ew years back. They will gradually use it and call it another version of Windows no doubt.
So, they both use crap generic hardware and and has only recently learned that they need to use what already existed in the 80’s… UNIX-based OS’s. They are still crap though. The only good computers had custom chipsets and UNIX-based OS’s, like Amiga, Atari ST, etc… I have a few Amiga computers running 16MB old-school RAM and on a 30MHz 68030 Motorla CPU that blow away todays quad core in the gigarange in gaming, animation, graphics, plain old processing power, etc… WHILE RUNNING Windows 95 and MacOS in two separate windows in emulation right on my workbench desktop. Mind you our 1Ghz Athlon PC can’t even emulate the 68030 Amiga without slowdown!
Let’s face it all Windows and Mac lovers know dick about computing- otherwise they’d realize that GOOD computing went the way of the beta-max vs. VHS and laser disc vs. DVD. The quality didn’t matter… it’s what’s cheaper.
I see a cheap Windows user getting things done inexpensively, but you’ve got to be a complete moron to like Macs- same freaking hardware as a PC nowadays, but you pay well over a grand just because of the OS and specific system configuration? Main office app for Mac is still MS Office too- go figure.

To clear things up: AMIGA had the first mouse created for commercial use (ignoring the Xerox one that never was commercially sold)-NOT MAC, The AMIGA was the first Stereo sound computer- NOT MAC, the Amiga was the first computer with color – NOT MAC, the Amiga was the first computer to hit all of the major color/graphic benchmarks (256 colors, 4096 colors, 16-bit, 24-bit, 32-bit)-NOT MAC. Hell, Mac still uses a one-button mouse… LAME.

I tell you what people care about. They care about spending $$$$ on a new computer that gets infected with a virus within hours or shits the bed before its warranty is out and the manufacturer wants to charge you $$$$$ to fix it. They might care that it slows down to a crawl and unless they constantly battle to keep it in tip top condition. Lets face it it is a battle to keep a pc running. Oh and if you take it somewhere to get repaired, chances are the person you take it too dosent know dick about computers either but know ust a little more than you and will gladly take your money. I’m the kind of guy everyone brings their computer to fix it or asks advice on fixing it. I’m no expert and would never claim to be but I know much more about computers than your average user. They see me as some kind of computer geniuos, yes really. That in its self tells you how easy it is to sell these problems on the public. The whole PC market is designed to make the user feel stupid, like its their fault and they don’t know what they are doing. The PC market plays on peoples lack of understanding about PC’s. Not just MS but hardware manufacturers and other software publishers capitalize on lack of knowledge and understanding.
Really the whole Mac, PC and Linux thing all depends on what you want to do with your time on the computer. Some people like fixing their computer and learning more than most about what makes it tick. Others just check email or do a bit of online gaming. Some see their computer as a tool or more importantly rely on it as part of a business. For me it has always been a bit of everything but most importantly a tool. I do graphic design, web design, audio production, light gaming, email, internet and office activities. Through my years of pain I’ve learnt that if I want serious audio production computer then I have to first research pc hardware very carefully and completely strip down the OS (windows). Failure to research this will result in essentially throwing money down the drain. I’ve done this many times in the past. Ok now that I have my audio machine I cannot go on the internet, play games or do any of that other stuff or my audio performance is guaranteed to suffer. That is a fact, unfortunately I proved this many times over. I used to have dedicated PC’s for making music and a PC for all the other stuff.
On average I was finding that I would have to completely wipe the OS about every six months. And I might add this is after performing regular maintenance routine, keeping up to date with virus software and firewall etc. Over the years I learnt more and more about maintaining a PC and buying into all this crapware. It honestly got to a point where I was absolutely sick and tired of fixing my computer. Remember I see it as I tool, all I want to do is use it and not spent countless hours repairing it. I was at breaknig poing the last time my HP died. This was a $1300 computer that had a hard drive failure. This is no lie, I must have spent in excess of 20hrs on the phone with tech support for them to diagnose this. They tried to charge me $500 for a new drive. Really HP 500 fucking dollars for a 500gb drive, you fucking cock suckers. Your support doesnt know dick abut computers and you get away with it because they know a little dick more than most people. BTW the computer was under warranty. HP = Cocksuckers but this is just one example the rest are no different. Since then this computer got a corrupt bios but I couldn’t flash it myself because the OS wouldn’t boot. I had to send it into them for another $300 because they wouldn’t give my the software to do it myself.
I know I haven’t really mentioned MS that much but they are the biggest cocksuckers of them all for the shite OS’s they put out. MS was the source of most of my other problems and countless hours fixing crap.
I got to a point where I had to walk away from computers all together (I nearly did) or find another solution because I felt like I was going crazy. I looked to apple and thought what a load of over priced crap. I looked at linux and tried out a few different distro’s. They were cool but they lacked certain software I needed and used for tools. Don’t get me wrong Linux is good but it depends on what you want to do. It wasn’t for me for my everyday stuff. I was forced to to at the mac but didnt want to waste load more money. So I turned my PC into a hackintosh and I was sold. The user interface was slicker than dog shit but most importantly I ran a few audio/midi benchmark tests that I had previously ran on the same hardware when the computer was running windows. The problems had gone away. In my mind that was absolutely indisputable that OS X was superior to Windows.
A few weeks later I went and bought a real mac and didn’t look back. I’me not going to go into all the reason why I think Mac is better but it feels like more of a friend than an enemy. I now have 3 macs 1 PC and 1 Linux. The PC is hardly every used anymore. Goodbye PC!
This is the only f#$%ing operating system that locks up on a regular basis. There are time when windows just goes to lunch and never comes back, or others when it is so slow, it’s impossible to work on. Security is a joke, and a lot of the updates when applied to the os break it. In my humble opion Microsoft needs to apologize to the user communities for this crap. And redesign the os from thr ground up.

I bought a laptop for home use and it had the latest windows 7 o/s.
Unfortunately it would not run some software I had in my older windowsXP
PC.
I enquied on the Microshaft website and there is NO PROBLEM!
download and install WindowsXP virtualPC and Windows virtualPC and away you go!
To download, I entered my version of the o/s (windows7 home premium 64 bit) and the language (english) and downloaded them.
There followed many hours of endless fun trying to get it to work.
Eventually, I found a video on the microshaft site to help the great unwashed to load and use the software. A small note during the video stated that only 3 versions of the primary o/s would work with this software and mine is one of the very many listed which does not. SO WHY ALLOW ME TO DOWNLOAD THIS SHIT IN THE FIRST PLACE?

Auto updates have crippled my PC. Redirected searches also make it next to impossible to do a free registery cleaner locate. “Gottcha” creations from MS at work. You buy a PC but you’ll never own it if they have their way. Most of my friends are Lenix cross-overs and I see this in my immeadiate future. Stuff those mothers!!!

I agree with everyone here that Micro$hit Vista is the worst OS Ive ever seen. there was one time It was so bad it took my friends laptop 10 minutes to boot and then BSOD’d on the login screen, lets just say i ended up replacing Vista with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS for him. THE DIFFERENCE WAS NIGHT AND DAY. anyway i later bought a dell studio 1558 i3 core laptop for myself with windows 7 (in my book windows 7= fixed up vista /damage control). i ended up having to system restore the OS from the factory image at least 5 times, (dell also made me mad because they didn’t even have the damn courtesy to send me a OS reinstall/recovery disk after i paid $680 some bucks for the laptop). between that and the annoying as hell random shutdowns and crazy driver issues i ended up getting Crunchbang Linux and replacing windows 7 completely. ever since i switched to Linux i have loved it and it runs so much more efficiently than windows ever did. I had used Windows my entire life buying into the whole “Your computer is a magical box that you can control by using what you don’t realize is an extremely limited handful of options and does incredibly useful things and is the core of our modern age and using this amazing piece of technology is going to cost you. Period”. Who knows how it works? It’s way over your head. Don’t even think about. Hand over the cash. Computer = Windows. (this was before mac commercials)
Well as I got older and my maturing brain’s lust for knowledge ensued, I began to ask myself things like how exactly does all this work? What is RAM and disk space? Why does my 300 dollar computer run slow as balls? Why does my parents 2 year old 900 dollar computer run even shittier? Processors and boot sequence and graphic cards were words from another language that I did not know. Thank god for the internet.
I eventually learned a mind-opening phrase: Operating System. And the existence of alternatives. HOLY MOTHER OF GOD this thing known to me as the “computer” is just a shitload of programs helping me (i’ll use the phrase helping lightly) USE the computer and there is a world of options out there that won’t crash and freeze and fail! (Imagine my surprise when I learned that you can actually get a whole lot of function out of a computer [not the really fun stuff] at a much more efficient pace without even HAVING a user interface and using a command line.)
So after a matter of time I stumble onto the glorious and life-changing world of Linux and the concept of open-source software. A. You literally have control over every aspect of your computer possible (should you so choose) B. It’s really not that hard to install it (try ubuntu) you just have to use your brain just a teensy bit. Burn file to cd. Boot from cd with a little button pressing. Ta da. Installation dummy program takes over. C. They have open-source programs to cover 95 percent of your needs ESPECIALLY if you are just a common computer user like myself. Email. Internet. Media playing/editing. Some games here and there. D. It is free.
E. IT IS MOTHERFUCKING FREE! Dear sweet lord people of the world please listen to me! There is something wrong with the fact that you can purchase $1800 software to run on your $300 dollar computer. (it won’t but I’m just saying) Thats fucking bullshit! Everyone wants to give pirates a bunch of shit but goddamn I sure as fuck ain’t got that kind of money. Supporting capitalism is not the answer(not that i’m against it)! Giving in to these monopolizing companies is making the rich, richer and we poor, poorer. Especially when there is a more powerful, more secure, and more customizable option, AND IT IS FREE TO ANYONE WHO WANTS IT. Open-source software is the future so long as the rich don’t suppress it. Bugs are found and fixed faster and there is an online community that will help you with ANYTHING at ALL. It truly is incredible, both in concept (as a socio-political movement) and in practice. I’m not a Mac fan. I’ve been a loyal Microsoft user from the beginning. However, I realized that MS only REALLY fucks you over when you need help. I needed to get rid of a pesky legacy registry file that was preventing me from installing PAID FOR trial software for the second time. (This software was required for my student activities.) Guess what? NO FUCKING WAY TO DO IT! My options:
1-Spend $400 on the full version of the software (i.e. pay TWICE)
2-Do a clean install with a completely new and expensive operating system
3- PAY $250 MOTHERFUCKING DOLLARS JUST TO ASK MICROSOFT SUPPORT ONE FUCKING COCKSUCKING QUESTION ABOUT MY PROBLEM!!!!!!!

Just went to update from windows 8 to 8.1. The thing took all day to download then instead of letting me choose wether to install now, later, or create removable media (as it was supposed to), it just installed the damn fucking thing! I was planning to clean install it so I could make a nice backup image. Now I have restore my pc, and re-download the whole fucking thing because they so stupid about making the update file hard to get. I have slow internet so this really fucking sucks! And don’t get me started on this new Embeded into EFI license key shit, or how they continutally try to trick you into getting a microsoft account just to use your own god damn computer. If it wasn’t for Unity I would just boycott Microsoft and switch to Ubuntu. I’m really freaking mad right now, I liked windows 7 for the most part, but it’s not compatible with my current hardware, so I can’t downgrade 😦
